Just as a bird born in a cage is not aware of it's ability to fly, millions of beautiful people held captive by high control religions need support to find their wings, break free and take flight!
Our mission is to empower survivors of high control religions to break free. We will give them the practical advice and assistance they need to succeed. To accomplish this, we will build a safe and supportive community, provide education, coaching, counseling, and in some cases, financial aid and emergency housing.
Our vision is to unite a global network of human rights activists to assist and uplift thousands of survivors of high control religions, beginning with former Jehovah's Witnesses. We especially want to support those who are vulnerable, such as teens, women in abusive relationships, the LGBTQ+ community, and people who are physically in, mentally out (PIMO) and feel trapped in a captive organization.
We will share the success stories of courageous individuals who are thriving after exiting a high control group. In addition, we will hold monthly online group discussions, in person events and retreats for education, inspiration, healing and growth. Finally, we hope to raise enough funds to provide tuition assistance to worthy applicants so that they can pursue their dreams.
Integrity: As individuals and as an organization, we strive to be credible, dependable, disciplined, honest, truthful, transparent, and trustworthy. Integrity builds confidence.
Inclusivity: We feel strongly that every individual matters. We seek to build a community that is accepting of all, no matter their race, gender or sexual orientation. We will pursue equality and uplift those who have historically been marginalized.
Kindness: We strive to treat everyone with kindness and dignity, honoring their humanity. This also includes how we view and treat current members of high control religions who may do or say unkind things because of their programming.
Respect: We honor personal choice; respecting diverse lifestyles and maintaining individuals' safety and privacy as they build self-determined lives. We listen and learn from others, valuing different voices, beliefs and expertise. We are committed to promoting a safe and hospitable environment where everyone who attends is treated respectfully.
Self-Determination: We affirm individuals' rights to determine the course of their own lives. We create opportunities for our members and staff volunteers to contribute to the organization in meaningful ways.
In 2022, motivated by a strong desire to pay it forward, four cult survivors—Anne, Daniel, Elaine, and Ryan—came together to work on the initiative that would become The Liberati. As the project gained momentum, three more joined the board—Ashli, Jenny, and Ramon. After incorporation in New York State, the organization officially debuted with the public launch of its website on July 4th, 2023, a day that symbolizes Independence and Liberty.
In early 2024, The Liberati achieved 501(c)(3) status as a public nonprofit charity. Despite being entirely volunteer-run with limited resources, your generosity has enabled us to make a real difference. Since 2023, we have provided over $10,000 in financial aid, offering tangible, material support to eight individuals in need. Beyond financial assistance, our impact extends globally—hundreds of people from dozens of countries benefit from our monthly group discussions and in-person meetups, fostering peer support and community. In late 2024, we welcomed Lily to our Board as Head of Program Development. Her expertise and dedication will be invaluable in expanding our mission and strengthening the support we provide. We are deeply grateful for her contributions and excited for what’s ahead.
While a few of our founding members, Anne, Daniel and Jenny, are not currently on the Board, their dedication was instrumental in transforming this grassroots movement into a reality. We are forever grateful for their invaluable contributions and their legacy and spirit lives on at The Liberati.
